China’s Communist Censors quickly stepped in to slice and dice the Friends The Runion special before its citizens could view it.

Like in America, Friends has an incredibly large fan base in China.

This meant Chinese government officials were well aware of the widespread interest in watching the sitcom’s reunion special.

When the show was sent to Beijing for review, Chinese censors stood ready to edit out any parts that didn’t conform with their egregious political ideology.

China edits out certain scenes from Friends The Reunion

Among the cuts were appearances by K-pop supergroup BTS, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga, and any cameos from LGBTQ Friends fans.

Chinese officials didn’t particularly care for BTS leader RM saying the show “really taught me things about life and true friendship”.

Why is BTS so hated in China? In October, RM mentioned the “history of pain and shared sacrifices” of South Korean and US soldiers during the Korean War, which China took as an insult as it supported the North in the war.

Lady Gaga

Chinese viewers never got to hear Lady Gaga singing ‘Smelly Cat” all because China declared her an enemy of the state in 2016 after she met with the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing views as a dangerous separatist.

Justin Bieber

China’s Communist Party is still anti-Bieber because in 2014 he posted a video of a visit to Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine.

Among Chinese government officials, the Yasukuni Shrine is viewed as a no-go zone. of course, Bieber’s visit resulted in getting permanently blacklisted from China.

Chinese Officials Issues a Friends Viewer Warning

China sent a reminder to its citizens that may seek out unedited versions of Friends: The Reunion.

Government officials reminded its citizenry that Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and BTS are not to be viewed as humans, but as threats to China and their way of life.
